Pieces of History: The Stories Behind the Street Names of Wilmore, Kentucky
Mark R. Elliott, retired professor of history, earned a B.A. cum laude from Asbury University (1969) and an M.A. (1971) and Ph.D. (1974) in modern European and Russian history from the University of Kentucky. He taught at Asbury University (KY), Wheaton College (IL); Samford University (AL), and Southern Wesleyan University (SC). In addition to teaching, Dr. Elliott held administrative posts for 19 years as director of the Institute for East-West Christian Studies (Wheaton College) and as director of the Global Center (Beeson Divinity School, Samford University). Dr. Elliott is the author of Pawns of Yalta: Soviet Refugees and America's Role in Their Repatriation (University of Illinois Press, 1982) and over 170 articles and reviews. He is the editor or co-editor of five reference works dealing with Christianity in the Soviet Union and is the founding editor of the quarterly East-West Church and Ministry Report, which received five Awards of Merit from the Evangelical Press Association. He served as editor of the East-West Church and Ministry Report for 25 years (1993-2017) and now serves as editor emeritus. Dr. Elliott has made numerous trips to Russia and Central and Eastern Europe since 1974. His travels have involved teaching; negotiating, and leading a student exchange program with Moscow State University; helping launch a program of international adoption of handicapped Russian orphans; hosting Moscow conferences on business ethics and the role of women in the church; on-site evaluations of Protestant seminaries; and leading short-term missions working with Russian orphans. Dr. Elliott is a founding trustee of the Russian-American Institute (Moscow) and previously served as a trustee of Asbury University (Wilmore, KY). He and his wife, Darlene, have four grown children adopted from Vietnam and Colombia, and four grandchildren.
