The keepsake within is a miniature re-creation of the life-size statue of Charles Wesley (the first of its kind in North America) located in front of Estes Chapel on the Kentucky Campus of Asbury Theological Seminary. Funded by the Charles Wesley Society, it was dedicated on September 14, 2014. Charles Wesley (1707-1788) is best known for the many hymns he produced throughout his lifetime – an astounding 8,989 in number. Many of these hymns were created during the latter part of his life when age, vigorous preaching and travel were catching up with him. As this season of life was when he produced the most hymns, this statue reflects his more wizened age. Some of his most well-known hymns include “And Can It Be That I Should Gain? (the unofficial “fight song” of Asbury Theological Seminary),” “Come Thou Long Expected Jesus,” and “Hark! The Herald Angels Sing.
